A “LEARN MORE” ACTIVITY FOR KIDS AGES 7–11

New! Summertime Discovery Days

SELECTED THURSDAYS | 9AM–12:30PM

These half-day sessions provide real, fresh learning experiences for kids!
Whether it’s your child’s long-time interest, or a new interest altogether, spending a few summertime hours learning skills related to a farm-based subject just may be their favorite activity of the summer. Sign your child up for one or more. 


2018 SUMMERTIME DISCOVERY DAYS

DISCOVERY DAY 1 | Thursday, July 12: Let’s Make a Cake
There will be no cake mix or electric mixer for this Discovery Day. Using a recipe from the Remick-Made Cookbook, Discoverers bake a blueberry cake in the manner that their great-grandmothers did. First, the group feeds the Remick chickens, gathers and washes the day’s eggs, and picks blueberries in the garden; after grinding wheat into flour they churn cream into butter. Then, the batter is mixed by hand before popping the filled cake pan in the oven. While the cake is baking, Discoverers make hand-whipped whipped cream and herbal iced tea, and pick flowers from the Remick gardens to make table-setting bouquets. Finally, once the group has set the tables in the gazebo, all enjoy the fruits of their combined labor along with their families. Pre-registration required by 4:00 p.m. on Monday, July 9. 

DISCOVERY DAY 2 Thursday, July 26: Creating with Wool
Discoverers visit the Remick sheep and see how dirty fleece can be. After learning how to wash fleece, they get to understand how versatile wool can be. They try carding wool and spinning it using hooks and drop spindles. They also learn about dyeing wool before using colorful wool to weave a bookmark and needle felt some projects. Discoverers take home their loom and felting needles so they can create new projects at home. Pre-registration required by 4:00 p.m. on Monday, July 23. 


DISCOVERY DAY 3 | Thursday, August 2: Future Chefs 
During this Discovery Day, students work in the commercial kitchen as they think of healthy menus, create a simple budget, prepare food, find recipes, practice good food safety, and then enjoy a meal/dish together. They sauté, bake and boil, use kitchen tools, learn basic knife skills and how to prepare meats and vegetables for a recipe, and how to use what is local and fresh— it’s cooking, soup to nuts. Recipes used in the session are provided so they can be tried at home. Pre-registration required by 4:00 p.m. on Monday, July 30. 


DISCOVERY DAY 4 | Thursday, August 9: Farmer for a Day
Farm chores are never done! Discoverers begin with doing laundry in the backyard. While the clothes are drying on the line, grind the corn, feed the chickens and collect the eggs. Next, try milking a goat and bottle feeding goat kids, followed by making hand-dipped candles. However, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy (or Jill a dull girl), as they say. Perhaps there will be time to play games that farm children played two-hundred years ago. Pre-registration required by 4:00 p.m. on Monday, August 6. 


DISCOVERY DAY 5 | Thursday, August 23: Green Thumb Academy
Join in this Discovery Day for a seed planting, weed pulling, bug-squishing good time. Students begin by examining what plants need to survive and thrive before heading out into the Remick garden. They get their hands dirty as they learn how our food grows. Everyone tries their hand at planting, tending, and harvesting some of the garden delights. Students sample some of the fruits of the season that they harvest themselves. Pre-registration required by 4:00 p.m. on Monday, August 20. 


Cost: $45 members; $55 non-members
Each session takes place from 9 a.m.–12:30 p.m. and is suitable for students ages 7-11. Class size is limited and pre-registration is required by the date provided in each session’s description. Call 603-323-7591 to register.
