We are pleased to welcome back Portsmouth’s Pontine Theatre to Tamworth\, with a timely story about a fictional New Hampshire town as it celebrates its 250th birthday. \nThe Flat Iron Lot\nExperience an original stage adaptation of Alice Brown’s short story “The Flat Iron Lot\,” published in 1899. (The elder Dr. Remick was age 33 when this story was published\, in his 5th year of practicing medicine.) Set in the fictional town of Tiverton — based on Brown’s hometown of Hampton Falls\, NH — the story chronicles a rural New England community’s celebration of its 250th birthday. With fits and starts\, contention and compromise\, the residents organize historical reenactments\, a grand parade\, and speeches from civic leaders and the town’s beloved\, unofficial historian. DESCRIPTION:During this guided walk\, you’ll discover for yourself the Remick property’s vital role in the lives of migratory birds. \nMarion Miles Remick (1906–1980) lived on this site from her marriage to Doc Remick in 1929 until her death. In addition to her interests in flower gardening\, cats\, and horse racing\, Marion enjoyed birdwatching. \nMarion’s interest in birding may have been encouraged by the grounds where she once lived\, which provide a sweeping landscape and a variety of bird habitats\, including forests\, fields and open water. Avid birders have spotted at least 89 bird species on the Remick grounds — see a sample list on eBird. Learn more about Marion and the “birds of Remick” with your interpretive guide while enjoying the expansive property. \nThe anniversary of Marion’s birth takes place on May 28 — 120 years ago. This activity is one way we honor her contribution to our site’s history\, often overshadowed by our wider story. We look forward to welcoming this year’s local crop of fourth graders\, who are eager to learn about various types and forms of agriculture in New Hampshire and how they impact their lives. \nWhat are School-to-Farm Days?\nAs stated on the New Hampshire Agriculture in the Classroom website\, “The event brings together 4th-grade students from different elementary schools throughout the county for a day of learning about the importance of agriculture. Farmers and other professionals are on hand to present mini-lessons and demonstrations on topics such as beekeeping\, sheep raising\, wool carding and spinning\, dairy cows\, oxen\, maple sugaring\, vegetable production\, soil ecology\, chickens and more. DESCRIPTION:The Captain Enoch Remick House—the crown jewel of the historic Remick farmstead—has a storied history. In part\, it served as the home of Dr. Edwin Remick and Mrs. Emily Remick\, née Crafts\, and their son\, Edwin C. Remick. It was also the location for the medical practice of Dr. Edwin Remick (1894–1935)\, which he later shared with his son\, Dr. Edwin C. Remick (1903–1993). Within the building’s walls and during home visits\, the Drs. Remick saw to the medical needs of their community for a combined 99 years: 1894–1993. \nThis spring\, work began on the Captain Enoch Remick House to repair and repaint the extensive exterior of this stately structure. With the professional and historical restoration skills of Cobalt Construction Management Company\, our goal is to bring the house back to its rightful integrity and luster\, honoring the important history of the building and allowing our country doctors’ story to be told with pride for generations to come. \n\nRAISING AWARENESS\, RAISING FUNDS\nDuring the 2026 NH Gives nonprofit fundraising event on June 9 and 10\, we are asking the public to contribute to our fundraising campaign: This Old House: Repairing & Repainting the Captain Enoch Remick House. Remick (1903-1993) — father-and-son country doctors — served their local hometown of Tamworth for 99 consecutive years from what is now the Remick Museum site. Step back in time during your guided tour of the medical rooms where both country doctors met with patients during their combined\, nearly century-long medical practice\, all housed within the stately Captain Enoch Remick House (on the National Register of Historic Places). \nVisit the original waiting area\, triage and examination rooms\, and apothecary. SUMMARY:Doc’s Dairy & Harness Horse History Tour
DESCRIPTION:WEDNESDAY & FRIDAY | 11 AM — Holsteins and horses were beloved by the Dr.’s Remick. This is most evident in the collections of the younger doctor\, Dr. Edwin “Doc” C. Remick (1903-1993)\, and his personal history with dairy farming and harness racing. SUMMARY:Picnic-scapes: A celebration of picnicking!
DESCRIPTION:During July — National Picnic Month — the Hearth Room at the Remick Country Doctor Museum & Farm is home to a lighthearted exhibit of “Picnic-scapes”: creative interpretations of picnic scenes from the museum’s collection and local guest exhibitors. \nThe museum’s display\, entitled “Doc & Marion on a Picnic\,” features a picnic basket and picnic-related items from the Remick collection. Items in the exhibit belonged to the museum’s namesake country doctor\, Dr. Edwin “Doc” C. Remick (1903-1993) and his wife\, Marion Remick\, née Miles (1906-1980). Visitors can learn what Doc Remick’s favorite picnic foods were\, see the recipe for his favorite picnic cookie\, and learn about sandwich trends from the 1950s\, as well as view personal-interest items of the couple. The modest living quarters the couple shared for 50 years\, including the kitchen where the couple would have prepared their picnics\, can also be visited (accessible by stairs only). \nIn addition\, enlarged copies of summertime photos from the Remick collection are displayed on the walls. DESCRIPTION:Picnicking is always welcome at the Remick farmstead\, but we especially encourage you to picnic with us on Saturday\, July 18\, from 11:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m.\, rain or shine\, to celebrate this summertime delight. Bring your own picnic to enjoy outdoors—pasture-side—at one of the many picnic tables under the tent and in the open air\, or bring a blanket to use as your “table.” \nIf you have a vintage picnic basket and/or picnicware\, you are encouraged to show it off. Feel like dressing up in “picnicking attire”? That’s encouraged\, too! Do you have a portable acoustic instrument? Bring it along and jam with others who have brought theirs\, or play solo. Add a bit more fun by taking a video or photos while you reveal what you packed as your picnic and share it on social media—#PicnicAt Remick. A variety of lawn games will be available for pasture-side play\, as well as kids’ binoculars for birding and eye-spy fun. Unlock the secrets of wild herbs\, medicine\, and culinary accents used by wise healers centuries ago—traditional Indigenous healing practices and local folk remedies. Go underground and tap into ancient roots. \nWrapped within the stability of the fertile fields and woods around us\, wildcrafting is a pathway to self-care. As the plants ripen and flowers boast their fragrant blossoms\, awaken to the possibilities that lead to re-wilding: awareness and self-maturation\, merging today’s energies with the ancient past. Reclaim a place in it. \nWe discuss activities in the field—preparation\, drying\, storing\, crushing—when to use fresh or dry\, and how each is accomplished. We will learn about endangered\, threatened\, or sensitive plants. \nPRESENTER’S BIO\nAuthor and Historian Mj Pettengill focuses on cultural narratives and traditions\, historical and intergenerational trauma integration\, ancestral healing\, and social welfare development. Aligned with ancient healing customs\, Mj practices the art of gathering wild plants for food and medicine on her farm in the mountains of New Hampshire. She has an MFA in creative writing and undergraduate studies in history\, theology\, music\, and psychology. DESCRIPTION:The Arts Council of Tamworth presents an afternoon of FREE live music in the village and a bit beyond! \nJoin the Arts Council of Tamworth for their 2nd annual participation in the worldwide Play Music on the Porch Day\, to hear local musicians playing live at three unique venues from 12:30 p.m.–4:30 p.m. or so… \nRemick is one of four locations where musicians will perform. For our part\, the front porch of the Museum Center will be the location to hear Fiona Howell playing and singing traditional Celtic music. Sit on the porch or gather on the grass in front of the porch. SUMMARY:Sustainability: An American Literary History
DESCRIPTION:A NH Humanities Program\, presented by Abby Goode\nWhat is sustainability? And how has American literature shaped our understanding of this concept\, in ways both surprising and disturbing? \nThis interactive program begins with a discussion of current ideas about sustainability. Then\, we will go back in time to examine Thomas Jefferson’s vision of American agricultural abundance\, which he contrasted with an overpopulated and under-resourced Europe. \nThroughout the 19th and early 20th centuries\, writers such as Walt Whitman and Charlotte Perkins Gilman drew on Jefferson’s agrarian vision to respond to sustainability crises of their time. As an English professor at Plymouth State\, Dr. Goode teaches courses in American literature\, critical theory\, wilderness literature\, writing and sustainability\, and American food issues.
