DESCRIPTION:Picnicking is always welcome at the Remick farmstead\, but we especially encourage you to picnic with us on Saturday\, July 18\, from 11:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m.\, rain or shine\, to celebrate this summertime delight. Bring your own picnic to enjoy outdoors—pasture-side—at one of the many picnic tables under the tent and in the open air\, or bring a blanket to use as your “table.” \nIf you have a vintage picnic basket and/or picnicware\, you are encouraged to show it off. Feel like dressing up in “picnicking attire”? That’s encouraged\, too! Do you have a portable acoustic instrument? Bring it along and jam with others who have brought theirs\, or play solo. Add a bit more fun by taking a video or photos while you reveal what you packed as your picnic and share it on social media—#PicnicAt Remick. A variety of lawn games will be available for pasture-side play\, as well as kids’ binoculars for birding and eye-spy fun. SUMMARY:Sustainability: An American Literary History
DESCRIPTION:A NH Humanities Program\, presented by Abby Goode\nWhat is sustainability? And how has American literature shaped our understanding of this concept\, in ways both surprising and disturbing? \nThis interactive program begins with a discussion of current ideas about sustainability. Then\, we will go back in time to examine Thomas Jefferson’s vision of American agricultural abundance\, which he contrasted with an overpopulated and under-resourced Europe. \nThroughout the 19th and early 20th centuries\, writers such as Walt Whitman and Charlotte Perkins Gilman drew on Jefferson’s agrarian vision to respond to sustainability crises of their time. But in so doing\, they depicted selective breeding and racial “improvement as the solution to population crises and the path to agricultural plenty.” We will explore this particularly eugenic conception of sustainability and discuss what new or different versions of sustainability might prove more useful in our current moment. \nThis program is held in partnership with the Tamworth History Center. \nFree \nAll ages welcome\nChildren must be accompanied by an adult. \nPreregistration welcome but not required:\n+ Call (603) 323-7591\n+ Email \n\nPRESENTER BIO\nAbby Goode is the author of “Agrotopias: An American Literary History of Sustainability” (UNC Press\, 2022). Her work has been supported by fellowships from the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS)\, the American Association of University Women (AAUW)\, the American Antiquarian Society\, the Institute for Citizens and Scholars\, and the First Book Institute at the Center for American Literary Studies at Penn State. As an English professor at Plymouth State\, Dr. Goode teaches courses in American literature\, critical theory\, wilderness literature\, writing and sustainability\, and American food issues. She is a recipient of Plymouth State’s Transformative Teaching Award and Distinguished Scholarship Award.

Discover the stories behind familiar Halloween symbols\, including the popularization of the black cat. \nAnd there’s more to explore throughout the museum: \n+ Learn how herbal traditions influenced the development of modern medicine. \n+ Discover some of New Hampshire’s more frightening tourism destinations. \n+ Delve into the literary and cinematic history of Halloween horror. \n+ Upstairs\, Doc and Marion Remick’s apartment offers a nostalgic look at Halloween decoration styles and entertainment popular in the mid-20th century. \nOutside: \n+ Make your way along the Pumpkin Path on the Binsack Trail. \n\nFREE \nAll ages\nPreregistration is not necessary. \n\nADDITIONAL OCTOBER EXPERIENCES \nHaunted History Tours\nAll month long\, Haunted History with the Drs. Remick: Eerie Medicine & Spooky Tales takes place Thursday–Saturday. These mid-afternoon and evening guided tours offer a spine-tingling journey through medical history—fringe and otherwise\, Bwahahahaha…! Preregistration and prepayment are required. Willett and discover her new children’s book\, The Witch Cat. \n+ October 24  Local tarot card reader Marina Biggio will be on-site for an afternoon of personal\, revealing sessions. \nHalloween comes to Tamworth Village\nOn Saturday\, October 31\, Tamworth Village becomes a pedestrians-only zone as it welcomes trick-or-treaters to stroll a glowing jack-o-lantern path between a large gathering of local organizations and businesses scattered throughout the village. Complete details for this community event\, organized by Tamworth Outing Club\, will be available as we near Halloween\, but here is an overview: \nEach October\, the Tamworth Outing Club (TOC) hosts Halloween celebrations in Tamworth Village\, offering FREE activities for all ages. The festivities begin with a community pumpkin carving event (before Halloween) on the lawn of the Tamworth History Center\, featuring pumpkins donated by local farms and businesses. Participants transform pumpkins into jack-o-lanterns\, which are later displayed along Main Street. \nOn Halloween night\, the pre-carved jack-o-lanterns are lit to illuminate the path for trick-or-treaters visiting welcoming homes and businesses.
