DESCRIPTION:The Arts Council of Tamworth presents an afternoon of FREE live music in the village and a bit beyond! \nJoin the Arts Council of Tamworth for their 2nd annual participation in the worldwide Play Music on the Porch Day\, to hear local musicians playing live at three unique venues from 12:30 p.m.–4:30 p.m. or so… \nRemick is one of three locations where musicians will perform. For our part\, the front porch of the Museum Center will be the location to hear Fiona Howell playing and singing traditional Celtic music. Sit on the porch or gather on the grass in front of the porch. SUMMARY:Fairy Houses and Gnome Homes with 4-H
DESCRIPTION:Join 4-H to create Fairy Houses and Gnome Homes at Remick\nParticipants will design and create a whimsical home for a fairy or gnome from found natural materials! In the first part of the activity\, we’ll have a guided search for natural materials around the Remick Museum Center. Afterward\, each participant will build their own little house on a cardboard base to take home. \nMaterials: Glue guns and house bases will be provided. Feel free to collect natural items around your own home to bring and share. \nOther requirements: Ages 7+ with a parent or guardian. The event will take place outside\, so please wear closed-toed shoes and appropriate clothing for the weather. In the event of heat or rain\, we will move the event indoors. \nFair Exhibit Display: Our builders are encouraged to show off their fairy house or gnome home at the Sandwich and Fryeburg Fairs\, in their 4-H Exhibit Halls. SUMMARY:Sustainability: An American Literary History
DESCRIPTION:A NH Humanities Program\, presented by Abby Goode\nWhat is sustainability? And how has American literature shaped our understanding of this concept\, in ways both surprising and disturbing? \nThis interactive program begins with a discussion of current ideas about sustainability. Then\, we will go back in time to examine Thomas Jefferson’s vision of American agricultural abundance\, which he contrasted with an overpopulated and under-resourced Europe. \nThroughout the 19th and early 20th centuries\, writers such as Walt Whitman and Charlotte Perkins Gilman drew on Jefferson’s agrarian vision to respond to sustainability crises of their time. But in so doing\, they depicted selective breeding and racial “improvement as the solution to population crises and the path to agricultural plenty.” We will explore this particularly eugenic conception of sustainability and discuss what new or different versions of sustainability might prove more useful in our current moment. \nThis program is held in partnership with the Tamworth History Center. \nFree \nAll ages welcome\nChildren must be accompanied by an adult. \nPreregistration welcome but not required:\n+ Call (603) 323-7591\n+ Email \n\nPRESENTER BIO\nAbby Goode is the author of “Agrotopias: An American Literary History of Sustainability” (UNC Press\, 2022). Her work has been supported by fellowships from the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS)\, the American Association of University Women (AAUW)\, the American Antiquarian Society\, the Institute for Citizens and Scholars\, and the First Book Institute at the Center for American Literary Studies at Penn State. As an English professor at Plymouth State\, Dr. Goode teaches courses in American literature\, critical theory\, wilderness literature\, writing and sustainability\, and American food issues. She is a recipient of Plymouth State’s Transformative Teaching Award and Distinguished Scholarship Award.

Leave with a story of your own. \n“The wolves are coming!”\nParaphrasing Joseph Gilman’s written account of a Tamworth\, New Hampshire\, event on November 14\, 1830: An alarm spread through Tamworth. “The wolves are coming down from the northern mountains in countless numbers.” A pack of wolves had entered a woodlot on Marston Hill—now Great Hill—threatening settlers and their livestock. Through the night\, townspeople surrounded the woods\, keeping the pack from entering the village. Local women brewed coffee and provided hearty refreshments to those keeping watch\, without which\, according to the historical account\, “their trials and sufferings would have been vastly more severe.” \nBy daylight\, some 600 people had assembled\, from children of ten to a gray-haired veteran of fourscore years. Under the command of General Quimby of neighboring Sandwich\, New Hampshire\, the townspeople advanced upon the woods. What happened next became one of Tamworth’s most memorable tales. \nWe’ll bring the history\, the coffee\, and the story of a night Tamworth never forgot. Bagged coffee is available for purchase while supplies last. \n+ “Victory!” Celebrate the End of the Siege\nGather at “Remick’s Hotel” to hear about General Quimby’s address to the crowd following the siege. And what better way to celebrate victory than with a little noise?! Legend has it that cheers rang out “in thunder tones” as General Quimby addressed the crowd from atop his carriage in front of the hotel. The commotion was said to have frightened the wolves so thoroughly that “there has not been one of them or their descendants seen or heard of in town since.” Revel in the victory by making a little thunder! \nAs the crowd disperses\, visitors are encouraged to step into the Tamworth History Center\, located across the road from “Remick’s Hotel\,” to view the Siege of Wolves painting by Jackson\, New Hampshire artist David C.
