Picnic-scapes: A lighthearted celebration of the art of the picnic

July 1, 2025 | 10:00 am - July 31, 2025 | 3:00 pm

During July — National Picnic Month — the Hearth Room at the Remick Country Doctor Museum & Farm is home to a fun exhibit of “Picnic-scapes”: creative interpretations of a picnic scene from the museum’s collection and local guest exhibitors.

The museum’s display, entitled “Doc & Marion on a Picnic,” features a picnic basket and related items from the Remick collection. Items in the exhibit belonged to the museum’s namesake country doctor, Dr. Edwin “Doc” C. Remick (1903-1993) and his wife, Marion Remick, née Miles (1906-1980). Visitors can learn what Doc Remick’s favorite picnic foods were, see the recipe for his favorite picnic cookie, and learn about sandwich trends from the 1950s. Enlarged copies of summertime photos from the collection are also on display. The modest living quarters the couple shared for 50 years can also be visited (accessible by stairs only).

Local guest exhibitors include the Arts Council of Tamworth, Barnstormers Theatre, Chocorua Lake Conservancy, Cook Memorial Library, and Tamworth Distilling & Mercantile.

Bring a picnic of your own!
Pack-in/pack-out picnics are always welcome at Remick, but during July, we especially invite you to celebrate this time-honored pastime by picnicking at the farmstead. Picnic tables are located under a tent and in the open air (the gazebo is temporarily closed). Pack-in/pack-out etiquette must be observed.

Picnicking items available for purchase in the store:

+ Bottled water

+ A selection of “patent medicine” sodas

+ Locally made ice cream (8-ounce cups) and cookie-ice cream sandwiches from Papa Beans Ice Cream

Admission: Pay as you wish
For all ages, ages 17 and under must be accompanied by an adult.
For more information, call (603) 323-7591.
Closed July 4.

This exhibit is part of our Summer at the Farmstead schedule.

Visitors share details about their favorite picnic spot, food or memory…

“On Father’s Day and Mother’s Day this year, we went on a picnic to Fullersberg in Hinsdale, Illinois. They were beautiful days to sit outside. While we didn’t make our sandwiches, we bought them from a favorite local shop! It is a great memory!”  ~ Jess Landis, Chicago, IL

“On the rocks in the river, by the cave in the falls. Scotch eggs are a favorite.”  ~ Janine Bryant, Acton, ME

“I love picnics. My favorite foods and things are apples, grapes, bread and ramen. And my cat, Gohan.”  ~ Fae, Maine (young visitor)

“Picnics with my birth families in the country where we picked raspberries, or by the lake so the children could play. Good food and good times with family.  ~ Diane
