Join us for a fantastic guided tour: Medical History at the Captain Enoch Remick House, Doc’s Dairy and Harness Horse History, and Historic Mural Art.
Enjoy a self-guided tour of the Museum Center and grounds.
Visit our exhibit gardens — highlighting three historical eras and medicinal herbs.
Bring a pack-in, pack-out picnic to enjoy on the grounds — picnic tables are located in the open and under the tent.
During National Picnic Month (July): Discover our lighthearted “Picnic-scapes” exhibit, featuring local guest exhibitors. Closed July 4 and 11.
Take part in special events: Make a Personal Perfume with Bloom Lab (July) and Herbal Plant Walk (August)

You’ll find us selling plants and other items at the Sandwich Farmers Market in neighboring Sandwich, NH each Wednesday (starting June 3), and sponsoring local music in Tamworth Village at the Tamworth Farmers’ Market and during the Concerts by the River series.

Tours: Guided and Self-guided
GUIDED TOURS

Join us for a history-based tour, where you can discover the fullness of the Remick story, one tour at a time.

Tours are available at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., Tuesday-Saturday.
All guided tours are suitable for ages 12+.
- Doc’s Dairy & Harness Horse History Tour | Wednesday & Friday 11 a.m.
- Historic Mural Art Tour | Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday 11 a.m. Tour unavailable June 30 and July 4.
- Medical History Tour | Tuesday–Saturday 1 p.m. Tour unavailable July 4.
SELF-GUIDED TOURS
- Uncover Remick history on your own | Daily 10 a.m.-3 p.m., suitable for all ages.
Exhibit Gardens
The Remick gardens are rooted in history! To help you think about gardening practices in times past, three distinct vegetable gardens are located in our garden exhibits area, each representing a garden style that was favored during a given period:

Early Republic: 1790s to 1840s
DEFINING FEATURES | Gardening for subsistence; rectangular beds; orderly design; plants in rows; veg/flowers/herbs all growing together in the same bed.

Victorian Garden: 1860s to the turn of the 20th century
DEFINING FEATURES | More decorative, not purely functional; fancy and exotic plant varieties; lush, ornate, patterned design—looks chaotic and overwhelming at first, but has an underlying order known to the gardener; accessories (e.g.: sundials, bird baths, etc.).

Victory Garden: Early 20th century (WWI, WWII)
DEFINING FEATURES | Back to subsistence and functionality over aesthetics, things that can be canned/preserved; everyone chipped in to do their part.

We also grow a Medicinal Herb Garden to help educate visitors about early country doctor history and provide examples of raised-bed and container gardening.

Our Vegetable & Herb Gardens
- As much as possible, we sow heirloom seeds.
- Heirloom seeds are seeds that are open-pollinated and developed before the 1940s, passed down from one generation to the next.
- Heirloom vegetables are not always perfect-looking, but the plants are reliable, adaptable, and give us valuable clues to how our ancestors ate.
- Heirlooms are generally more resistant to adverse growing conditions and are more likely to thrive on their own without chemical fertilization, irrigation or pesticides.
- Each year, we try new varieties of vegetables to see what might work best for our growing conditions or to support a particular educational focus.
Marion Remick Memorial Garden (1996)
A shady, quiet garden located on the street side of the Museum Center Barn, next to our front entrance. It was planted in honor of Marion Remick, “Doc” Remick’s wife, who loved gardening and was a member of the Tamworth Garden Club. The garden’s layout and fencing are based on Marion’s 1930s design.

Planting Considerations in Tamworth, NH
We are located in Hardiness Zone 5a: This zone experiences average minimum temperatures of -20°F to -15°F. Zone 5a covers a significant portion of central New Hampshire. The state is primarily in zones 5a and 5b, with only a few exceptions.

The average first frost is between September 1–10, while the average last frost occurs between June 1–10. [The average high temperature in Summer is 78°F, while the average high temperature in Winter is 29°F.

Special Exhibit
Add a bit of old-time fun to your visit! During the month of July (closed July 4 and 11) — National Picnic Month — our Hearth Room is home to a lighthearted exhibit of “Picnic-scapes.” The display includes “Doc & Marion on a Picnic,” with picnicking items from the Remick collection, and creative interpretations of a picnic scene from local exhibitors.

Combine it with a picnic of your own!
Picnics are always welcome at Remick; pack-in/pack-out etiquette must be observed.
